Veterinary Team:

Bill Bishop BVSc.(Dist). MACVS. Dip Vet Med.
After graduating in 1972 from Massey University, Bill spent three years in general practice in South Otago, followed by two years in Canada pursuing post graduate studies. In 1978 he became a partner of the Canterbury Equine Clinic. Bill is one of three registered specialists in equine surgery in private practice in New Zealand.

 

Helen Bishop BVSc.
Helen graduated in 1972 from Massey University and after three years in practice in South Otago, she spent a year as an Associate Professor at the University of Guelph in Canada. She is a founding partner of the Canterbury Equine Clinic and is principally involved in clinic management.

 

Richard Turner BVSc.
Richard graduated from Massey University in 1989 and spent ten years in practice before joining us at the Canterbury Equine Clinic in 1995. Richard became a practice partner in 2002. He is an accomplished surgeon and has a special interest in lameness diagnosis and ultrasonographic scanning.

 

Hamish Ranken BA, BVSc.(Hons).MACVS
Hamish graduated from Melbourne University in 2000 and practiced in Australia for two years prior to completing an internship in equine surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. He joined us at the Canterbury Equine Clinic in 2004 and has recently completed his MACVS in equine surgery. In addition to his surgical skills, Hamish has a keen interest in lameness diagnosis and co-ordinates our nuclear scanning facility.

 

Amira Mikhail BSc. D.V.M.
Amira graduated in 2006 from the University of Guelph in Canada. After participating in the one year internship program at the CEC,
she is continuing on as an associate veterinarian at the clinic. She has a keen interest in equine reproduction, as well as in the use of nuclear scintigraphy (bone scanning) as a tool for lameness diagnosis.

 

Professor Wayne McIllWraith Consultant Surgeon
The skeletal and joint disease specialist graduated from Massey in 1970 with a BVSc and is currently Professor of Veterinary Surgery and Director of the Equine Sciences Teaching and Research Program at Colorado State University in the United States. He is known for his pioneering research in arthroscopic surgery for horses and was the first vet to adapt the technique of arthroscopy for the examination and treatment of problems associated with limb joints of the horse.


Sally Cockerill BVSc
Sally is our newest intern, recently having joined our team at the CEC from England, where she graduated in 2008 from Liverpool University. She will partake in a one year internship program. In addition to her regular responsibilities as a staff veterinarian, she is our surgical anesthetist. Sally enjoys riding, snowboarding and helping out on her fiance's farm up in Hawkes Bay.

Kirsten Harman BVSc.
Kirsten is the 2009 intern. She graduated from Bristol University in the U.K. in 2006 and after working in the U.K. as a mixed animal practitioner she decided to join the CEC for our one year internship program. Kirsten enjoys runs in the countryside and riding expeditions to remote locations. She looking forward to learning how to ski on the Canterbury Club Fields.

 


Support Team:

Christine Faass
Christine has been our office manager for over 20 years. She handles all the accounts for the clinic and should be contacted for all administrative and account enquiries and concerns.

 

Diane Taylor
Diane is a qualified laboratory technician. She manages our on-site laboratory services. With a case-load of over 1800 equine blood analyses per year for over 20 years, she has amassed a vast knowledge of equine hematology.

 

Sarah Lowe
Sarah joined us at the Canterbury Equine Clinic over 8 years ago and is our chief veterinary nurse and surgical coordinator. She maintains an active equine interest outside the clinic, regularly competing at events.

 

Tammy Kelly
Tammy joined us in 2005 after completing her Certificate in Veterinary Nursing. In addition to her nursing responsibilities, Tammy is responsible for coordinating patient care within the hospital.
